Glycolysis

A metabolic pathway that breaks down glucose to generate energy.

It is a cytosolic metabolic pathway that converts glucose into pyruvate through enzyme-catalyzed reactions coupled to energy conservation. It does not directly require oxygen, although its products can enter aerobic or anaerobic pathways.

Glycolysis provides ATP and reducing power to cells in nearly all organisms. It is a central pathway of carbohydrate catabolism and connects glucose metabolism with multiple biosynthetic and energy-producing fates.

The video presents its ten reactions as an investment phase that consumes two ATP and a payoff phase that produces four. The balance per glucose is two net ATP and two pyruvate molecules, and the pathway is also called the Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas pathway.
