Genetic code deciphered (1961–1966)

Between 1961 and 1966, the genetic code assigning codons to amino acids was deciphered.

Between 1961 and 1966, a group of researchers led by Marshall Nirenberg and Heinrich Matthaei experimentally deciphered the genetic code, the correspondence between codons and amino acids.

The finding made it possible to establish that the code is practically universal among living beings, which laid the foundations of modern biotechnology, including the production of human proteins in bacteria.

The video recounts that deciphering this table took five years, from 1961 to 1966, beginning with Nirenberg and Matthaei and their work with Escherichia coli, and highlights that it was later discovered that the same table works in archaea, fungi, plants, and animals, with a few exceptions.
