Entity

Peptidyl transferase

Ribozyme in the ribosome that forms the peptide bond between amino acids.

It is a ribozyme, that is, a catalytic component made of RNA, located in the large subunit of the ribosome, that catalyzes the formation of the peptide bond between the newly arrived amino acid and the growing amino acid chain.

That an RNA, rather than a protein, performs this catalysis is one of the pieces of evidence supporting the RNA-world hypothesis for the origin of life.

The video describes it as the peptidyl transferase ribozyme, located in the large subunit of the ribosome, and explains that it forms a bond between the new amino acid and the growing chain held in the P site.
