Formylmethionine
Modified form of methionine that starts protein synthesis in bacteria.
It is a modified form of the amino acid methionine, with a formyl group added to its amino group, which in bacteria is the first amino acid incorporated into every nascent protein chain.
It marks the start of translation in prokaryotes: it is carried by a special initiator transfer RNA that positions itself at the ribosome's start site together with the corresponding codon.
The video notes that a special transfer RNA carrying this amino acid settles into that site, and recalls that starting the synthesis of a protein requires methionine, or in the case of bacteria, formylmethionine.
