Entity

Lactose

Disaccharide that, when it is the only carbon source, activates transcription of the lac operon.

It is a disaccharide made up of glucose and galactose.

It acts as an inducer of the lac operon in bacteria: its presence, in the absence of glucose, allows transcription of the genes needed for its own metabolism.

The video presents it as the signal that, when it is the only available carbon source, causes Escherichia coli to release repression of the lac operon; it also states that β-galactosidase breaks it down into glucose and galactose.
