Phosphofructokinase 1
Enzyme that regulates the speed of glycolysis.
It is a transferase enzyme that catalyzes fructose 6-phosphate + ATP → fructose 1,6-bisphosphate + ADP, with Mg²⁺ as a cofactor. This essentially irreversible reaction is a commitment step in glycolysis.
Phosphofructokinase 1 is a major control point for glycolytic flux and responds to cellular energy needs. Its allosteric regulation coordinates glucose breakdown with the availability of ATP and other metabolites.
