Glucose
Simple sugar that is the starting point of glycolysis.
It is a six-carbon monosaccharide, an aldohexose, that serves as a fuel and metabolic precursor. Its hydroxyl groups allow it to participate in numerous oxidation, phosphorylation, and biosynthetic reactions.
Glucose occupies a central position in cellular metabolism because its breakdown can generate ATP and its intermediates feed anabolic pathways. In animals, it is the main energy source for the brain and the only one for red blood cells.
The video presents it as the sugar with which glycolysis begins. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, it enters the cytoplasm by facilitated transport, down its concentration gradient and without ATP expenditure.
