Entity
Pyruvate
Final product of glycolysis, with several possible metabolic fates.
It is a three-carbon keto acid, present in its ionized form at physiological pH, and a fundamental metabolic intermediate. It is formed at the end of glycolysis by transfer of a phosphate from phosphoenolpyruvate to ADP.
Pyruvate connects glucose breakdown with cellular respiration, fermentation, and several biosynthetic pathways. Its fate depends on the organism, redox state, and oxygen availability.
The video identifies pyruvate as the final product of glycolysis's ten reactions. Under anaerobic conditions, Saccharomyces cerevisiae converts it into acetaldehyde and then ethanol; it can also become lactate, alanine, or acetyl-CoA.
