Alcohol dehydrogenase
Enzyme that converts acetaldehyde into ethanol.
It is an oxidoreductase enzyme that reversibly interconverts alcohols and aldehydes or ketones using NAD⁺ or NADH. The direction of the reaction depends on substrate and cofactor concentrations.
Alcohol dehydrogenases participate in the metabolism of alcohols and carbonyl compounds in many organisms. In yeasts, their activity is indispensable for balancing redox state during alcoholic fermentation.
The video places it in the final step of alcoholic fermentation, where it reduces acetaldehyde to ethanol. In that reaction it regenerates oxidized NAD from reduced NAD and allows glycolysis to continue producing energy without oxygen.
