Entity

Escherichia coli

Intestinal bacterium used as a model organism in molecular biology.

It is a gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium that normally inhabits the intestine of humans and other warm-blooded animals.

It is the quintessential model organism in molecular biology: its genetics, physiology, and biochemistry are known in great detail, and it has served as the experimental basis for establishing much of the central dogma.

The video uses Escherichia coli as the reference for all the replication, transcription, and translation animations it presents, and clarifies that eukaryotes carry out very similar processes, though with different proteins and additional steps.
