Yeast genome sequenced (1996)
In 1996, the genome of Saccharomyces cerevisiae was fully sequenced.
In 1996, an international research consortium completed sequencing the genome of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It was the first genome of a eukaryotic organism published as a complete sequence.
This milestone provided a reference genetic repertoire for studying conserved cellular functions and accelerated eukaryotic functional genomics. It also consolidated yeast as a model organism for genetic research.
The video states that the genome contains about 12 million base pairs and around 6,000 genes. It notes that its complete sequencing consolidated yeast as a model because of its easy manipulation and rapid reproduction.
