Molecule that stores and carries the energy cells use.

It is a nucleotide composed of adenine, ribose, and three phosphate groups, whose hydrolysis can be coupled to endergonic cellular reactions. It interconverts with ADP and AMP as chemical energy is transferred or conserved.

ATP is the cell's immediate energy currency and participates in active transport, movement, biosynthesis, and regulation. Its concentration and that of its hydrolysis products report on cellular energy status.

The video compares it with a battery that releases energy when it loses a phosphate and becomes ADP. In glycolysis, two ATP are invested in the preparatory phase and four are produced in the payoff phase, for a net gain of two.
