Mineral cofactor used by several glycolysis enzymes.

It is an essential divalent metal ion, Mg²⁺, that coordinates with phosphate groups and other charged molecules. In cells, much of the ATP is associated with magnesium.

Magnesium stabilizes charges and supports the activity of numerous enzymes, including enzymes that use nucleotides. It also contributes to the function of nucleic acids, ribosomes, and membranes.

The video mentions it as a cofactor for hexokinase and phosphofructokinase 1. Both enzymes use it in reactions that transfer a phosphate group from ATP to other molecules.
